Ear cancer: rare but sometimes aggressive

| Jul 23, 2020 | Medical Malpractice

Cancers are among the most misdiagnosed of conditions in Indiana. However, the reason behind the errors may differ. Some can be misdiagnosed because they are so rare. For example, around 300 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ear cancer each year while on the other hand some 250,000 cases of breast cancer arise.

Different kinds of ear cancer

Most ear cancers affect the outermost zone of the epidermis. Basal cell carcinoma, which impacts the basal layer cells, usually never spreads. Basal cell carcinoma, the most prevalent ear cancer, are more likely to spread, especially if it affects the ear’s outer cartilage. The rarest but most aggressive ear cancer is melanoma, which is found deeper in the skin in the melanocyte cells.

Symptoms will differ based on what part of the ear the cancer affects. Cancer of the outer ear, which includes the earlobe, rim and outer entrance, can reveal itself in scaly patches on the skin, white bumps under it and even skin ulcers. Middle ear cancer will usually result in a bloody discharge, pain and numbness. When it’s the inner ear, one may experience headaches, dizziness and loss of hearing.

Ear cancer often linked with skin cancer

Though its cause is unknown, ear cancer usually arises from skin cancer. Therefore, those who run a high risk for the one, such as those with light skin or who are frequently exposed to sunlight, will run a higher risk for the other. Frequent ear infections are another contributing factor.
